Sam Hunt is computerizing country with his poppiest release to date. The Georgian country singer’s new single definitely took an alternative road in comparison with his previous work by sticking with a laid-back and light rhythm.
“Body Like a Back Road” is Hunt’s first release since 2015 and it does not meet the caliber of his previous album. Intricate lyricism illustrates his appreciation for the body of a beautiful woman, yet the music leaves something to be desired. Based on mostly computerized melodies with an R&B feel, Hunt allows true country music to take the backseat to modern adaptations of technological tunes.
Computerized guitars and snaps open up the track’s first verse, which then transforms into the chorus “Body like a back road/ driving with my eyes closed/ I know every curve like the back of my hand” to visually represent the iconic woman of Hunt’s desires. As per usual, Hunt’s voice is as smooth as ever. The mellow melodies are easy to groove to and the descriptions of “doing 15 in a 30” and getting “there when we get there/ every inch is a mile” frequently point out his knowledge and thorough time spent with the woman’s body.
With those descriptions, however, come errors in the production aspect. Hardly any stylistic elements or runs exist to differentiate the choruses and all of the verses are sung in the same octaves and rhythms as the others. I found this out the hard way when I thought the song was super long and it just ended up repeating without me noticing. Even though this smooth and steady song doesn’t sound bad by any means, it lacks enthusiasm and delivers no breaths of fresh air.
Had Hunt mixed in some extra harmonies with the reverberating background vocals, or even sped up the chorus, this single would be topping the charts for months. In what could be a part of an upcoming album, Hunt has just set the tone for a very contemporary and automated discography full of music far off the road of country.
