The Ready Set has always had lovey dovey lyrical themes to his music and it’s no surprise that his latest single “Good Enough” still plays into that theme. However, there’s a noticeably different feel to the track that almost sounds like a new life for the electro-pop songster. Maybe it’s his recent transition to Hopeless Records? Maybe it’s the clear fact that he and the fans that have stuck around for a long time are twentysomethings still trying to figure this whole adulthood thing? Whatever it is, “Good Enough” is the game changer that has the potential to get him the mainstream recognition that he deserves.
By any means in The Ready Set only a part of one genre because he incorporates so many different musical elements in his music. In the case of “Good Enough”, he ventures into that slight R&B influenced dance pop that seems tho be trending in popular music (think new school Nick Jonas collaborating with Zedd). However, he gracefully includes the piano into the mix and differentiates it against other pop singles as a happy dance song with a somewhat gloomy subject matter.
“Good Enough” is in a different category of love song from a lyrical standpoint and has a more realistic aspect to it than most pop songs. The Ready Set is not singing about all of the things that he loves about his girl or all of the cool things that he wants to do for her, but about why he wants to better himself to be worthy of her. From the songs starting lines (“running to the middle of nowhere/chasing the ghost of a life we shared/I’m a monster, well aware of that/and I never wanna hold you back”), it’s pretty darn clear that he did something to completely screw up everything with her.
Just when you think that he’s an idiot for messing up a good thing, the simple-yet-powerful chorus consisting of “all that I wanna do/is just be good enough, good enough, good enough for you” shows the listener that he knows exactly what he did and is willing to go above and beyond to make things right. He really proves his mission in verse two, where he admits that it wasn’t fair to have this amazing girl care about him when his heart wasn’t fully in it (fire burned from the night we met, yeah/blue as the sea, swimming in your bed/and there might be so much I’ve lacked…”).
I’ve been a fan of The Ready Set for a good while now and I have to admit that this single might be the beginning of a new chapter in his musical career. “Good Enough” is by far one of his most mature “love songs” to date purely because he portrays the reality of what a lot of today’s relationships have to endure due to uncertainty between the parties involved. The final line in verse two (“…but I can’t stop ’til I get you back”) is that perfect blend of romantic and heartbreakingly bittersweet, and evidently proves that “Good Enough” is so much more than just a pop love song.
